What does the treatment of fractures include?

The usual treatment following a fracture is, according to the instructions of the physician, either surgical or conservative. In any case, the goal is the proper reduction of the bones. Conservative treatment consists of immobilization in a splint or cast for a period of time which is necessary for the bone to heal. In case the choice is surgical treatment the goal is the optimum reduction and stabilization of the fractured bones. Again, there is a period of immobilazation, that allows the bone to heal, depending on the severity, the location and the complications of the injury. During this time the bridging of the broken pieces takes place, following a biological procedure through different stages.

When can Physical therapy start?

in many cases, physical therapy can start immediately, in order to avoid atrophy and to give instructions to the patient to use aids if necessary. for example in case there is an injury in the lower extremity the patient how to be taught how to use crutches safely. during the immobilization period, special attention must be given to the strengthening of other joints, as well as the rest of the body, so that the patient is able to come back earlier to the previous level of activity.

When the doctor approves, mobilization of the injured area can start. usually this is painful, swollen and there is a lack of movement. This is the reason that it is very important to deal with the pain and swelling in the early stages of rehabilitation, in order to facilitate movement.

TENS, TECAR, whirlpool, ultrasound and special type of bandaging can be used to help with the above symptoms.
